On the eve of January 18, 2008 the skies were cloudy and it was rainy and misty outside. Okay, if it's raining I wouldn't get any pictures because I am sick and my husband certainly would not take pictures in the rain. However, by around 10am the next morning, the sky had cleared enough for decent picture taking and a nice sized crowd of what he called "older people." Ha, he is 70 and I am 67. Okay, what he meant was there were people for whom Janis had done some babysitting for in her youth. Instead of the typical yearly birthday bash, this year of 2008, there was to be a special dedication at the former home of Janis Joplin. At 10:30 my husband took off for the 11:00 a.m. unveiling of the Texas Historical Marker dedication on the lawn of the home where Janis Joplin lived from the time she was four years old until she left home in the early sixties. The address is 4330 - 32nd Street, in Port Arthur, Texas. Saturday evening was the Annual Birthday Bash in the Parker Center at Lamar State College on the Port Arthur Campus. We did not attend that so there won't be photos of that in here. Preceding the concert, at 2:00 p.m., there was a press conference held in the Museum of the Gulf Coast. The article can be found here in the Port Arthur News. The Museum is located at 700 Procter, Port Arthur, Texas. For additional info, go to The Museum of the Gulf Coast. I will identify the people in the seventh photograph down. Left to right: Wearing sunglasses is Yvonne Sutherlin; behind her is Dr. Sam Monroe, Carlita Zummo, To the right of the marker is: Alicia Sanchez, Alicia's son and husband, and ? (My sister is working at getting this name.)

Below are photos I scanned from our TJ yearbooks. Left is Janis her sophomore year. Right is Janis her Junior year.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the play Love Janis at The Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. I gave them a few pictures of the historical marker dedication and they were elated to receive them. It was interesting that they used two Janis' to portray Janis simultaneously. The Houston Chronicle Newspaper had a video of the tour of Port Arthur for the places that Janis went. The downtown area of Port Arthur has been destroyed by hurricanes as well as vandalism. Pleasure Pier had an olympic sized swimming pool, arcades, and rides. Those things no longer exist. Our school, Thomas Jefferson High School did not have a fence around it when we were in school there. Too many things have changed. The video no longer exists. Sorry.
