animated image that reads new Alfred came in SECOND place at the State Senior Games in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday March 25, 2012 in his age group. Alfred is currently 72 but will be 74 in September therefore he competes in the 74 - 79 and/or up age group. Alfred came in 8th in the 70 to 74 yo age group, at the Nationals held in Pearland, Texas in 2011. He is looking forward to the 2013 Natinals. He was the oldest in his group for the Nationals.

Below are links to training and fitness websites of special interest for athletes of all ages. Please do click through here so I may receive the credit. I am an affiliate for some of these sites. I have studied the refueling supplements Alfred was using and researched for better supplies. What I did find in the way of supplements, DVDs and books has helped to increase his performance and he himself will tell you that. It helps to have a supportive spouse on your side, especially when she is a retired nurse and worked as a photographer while in nursing school. I have videod Alfred while he swims which has helped him to see where he needs to improve or how he has improved. Be sure to check out the text links. I did some research on open water swimming with regards to electrolytes and sea water and came up with an excellent website for Triathletes plus the interview with Ahelee, the gal who swam the English Channel in 11 hours and 22 minutes and gained 40 pounds to be able to accomplish that feat. Yes, she lost the weight and went back to being a Triathlete. At the end of this page are links for Senior Games Events.

The first book Alfred used, by Gale Bernhardt, was: Triathlon Training Basics (an older edition) This book contains information new triathletes need in order to successfully complete a sprint or an Olympic distance Triathlon.

The book Alfred used in 2006 was: Training Plans for Multi-sport Athletes by Gale Bernhardt It is loaded with 14 Triathlon and multi-sport training plans designed for athletes of varying abilities.

Alfred is currently using the 2007 edition of Gale Bernhardt's book Training Plans for Multi-Sport Athletes. You may purchase these Gale Bernhardt books by clicking on the amazon logo on this page and searching the book section. Thanks!

Run Training by Ken Mierke is an excellent book for runners. Search for it on Amazon please so I may receive my commission. The metronome is being used by runners to set their pace. We purchased a Seiko DM70 credit card sized metronome from Discount Teachers Music website. Click on the metronome image above to visit their website. Please mention Alfred's name and the website address for this page if you place an order. For wetsuits and scuba gear try this website. They changed their name from unrealfind to House of Scuba. This is where I purchased Alfred's tri wetsuit. They measure 5/3/2mm which means they meet the 2013 USA regulations. House of Scuba

Alfred has found that this metronome is a great help at keeping his pace when running up an incline, especially on courses that have rolling hills. Successful athletes run to 180 bests a minute. SPECIAL NOTES OF INTEREST: TRANSITIONS When training for a Triathlon, don't forget the Fourth Discipline which is the TRANSITIONS! Be sure to practice that too. There are videos and books for transitions too. I purchased that resource for Alfred too. ;-) HAMMER NUTRITION is where Alfred obtains his sports supplements. I knew there was something better for him than what he was using when he first came back into my life in 2005. After we married in 2006 I started searching the internet. I found and purchased the DVD video ENDURANCE NUTRITION for Alfred for a first anniversary present. In that video HAMMER NUTRITION was mentioned. You can get 15 percent off your first order. Alfred purchases his Compex Sport Elite Muscle Stimulator from Hammer Nutrition. It relaxes muscles, strenthens muscles, helps with recovery after training or participating in competion plus it also massages. Alfred uses it and it definitely helps, especially with recovery. It is recommended and endorsed by many atheletes.
BENEFITS "The Compex Sport Elite, our newest Muscle Stimulator, is recommended for the competitive/high performance athlete that has a rigorous training and exercise regimen. It features a total of NINE programs and 5 levels of progression will keep elite athletes challenged with every training session resulting in a true competitive advantage!"
Please click on the logo to go to their website and to get a 15 percent discount on your first order. Don't forget to mention Alfred Hebert's name and my website. Thanks.

BICYCLE SPORTS in Beaumont, Texas is where
Alfred purchased his Triathlon bike and his
first triathlete apparel. At their site you
will find not only bicycle gear and apparel
but links for special needs athletes, dates
for bike rides, articles of interests and
informative articles for new comers to the
Beaumont, Texas area. Please tell them you
found their information on Alfred's resource
page in his wife's website. Thanks bunches!
An interesting quote from Bicycle Sports website:
"Bicycle riding as little as three miles a day
will improve your sex life. Whooda thunkit?"
Oh, be sure to ask for Eric and tell him
Alfred sent you.

Bicycle Sports installed a Saris PowerTap SL
on Alfred's bike. He continues to use his Polar
heart rate monitor in conjunction with the PowerTap.
He uploads the information from the PowerTap computer
to his desktop pc and is excited about the purchase.
To view an example of what the PowerTap records

Total Immersion Swimming Free Style Demo by TI Coach Shinji Takeuchi About Body Roll/Rotation Note the video on their home page is good too. It is animated. Michael Phelps Easy Swim Currently unavailable Comparison of Free Style with Jones, Phelps, and TI Coach Takeuchi Use Your Hips to Power Your Swimming Getting personal: If you have any helps for "Sweat Rash" or "Jock Rash" please send them to me (Carolyn the webmaster) and if I check them out and they seem worthy, I will post them here. For "Sweat Rash": A doctor once told me (Carolyn) to use Selsiun Blue shampoo for a fungus (tenia versicolar) I used to have on my torso. Head and Shoulders in the blue bottle contains the same ingredients as Selsiun Blue and cost much less. It works great for "Sweat Rash." From our personal experiences we have found that A & D Ointment works well to prevent "Jock Rash." This is not jock itch, okay. It's a rash that is caused from riding a bike intensely as done by long distance bike riders and triathletes. Speed Wash And Dry - A handy trick for traveling cyclists is speed clothes washing and drying. Ideally, you'll always ride in clean gear because dirty shorts increase the chances of developing saddle sores. Unless there's a laundry mat nearby, though, it can be difficult to wash your pedaling pants when you're traveling. If you're lucky, it might be a hot day and scrubbing them in the motel sink and hanging them to dry might work fine. But, let's say, it's not warm. Or, that maybe you forget to wash them until the next morning. How do you manage to get them ready in a hurry? It's easy: Wash them thoroughly in the sink. Then roll them up in a towel and wring (get a friend to hang on to the other end of the towel) to quickly dry the shorts. If you do this several times using different towels, you'll be able to almost completely dry the shorts in minutes and they'll be clean and ready for more miles. If you have resource suggestions please send them to me by clicking on the webmaster link below. Thanks! animated image that reads new Alfred and I both belong to East Texas Triathletes in Tyler, Texas. They are a friendly and fun bunch of people. Check out their website. I have several photo albums in their gallery. See what is happening with this group of guys and gals. Time Trials begin Thursday, March 29th. The first bike will leave at 6:30 so be there early. Check the website for more information. Killer Hill is a real workout.

Senior Games San Antonio

The American Triathlon Calendar

National Senior Games Association

You have to qualify in a state game to qualify for the national games. Triathlons are not the only sport for Senior Games. They have dominoes, horse shoes, table tennis, swimming, race walking, running, volley ball, some areas have forms of square dancing, bike races, and other forms of sports. Triathlons are swim, bike, run back to back. Check it out. You may find a sport event you can enter in. Bridge anyone? Table tennis? Volley Ball? The National Institute on Aging has a guide for Seniors over 60. If you are not into Eudurance Sports or if you want to get fit and slow the aging process then click here and download their handbook. Visit their website for more information. FYI: Suggestion from this Triathlete's Wife and Webmaster: Keep more than records of your training times and final race times. Keep a journal. I have read that successful people keep journals. Include notes of how well you performed, where you need to improve and where you DID improve. Have someone take pictures of you AND take videos of you especially when you swim. Take a hint from football players. They review and repeatedly review after the game to see where they need to improve and how to improve. Open water swimming at sea is totally different than swimming in a lake or in a pool. Swimming in a group is totally different than lap swimming alone or with a buddy or two. Consider how to acclimate to where the event will take place. That doesn't just mean your body. Consider how the climate will affect your vehicle and the distance traveled will affect your vehicle. Consider the time zone where the event will take place and study your own body's circadian rhythm. If you are not familiar with that term I suggest you get familiar with it. Is it worth shipping your racing bike or should you take it with you? Pros and Cons: If you are traveling a long distance you do not have to be concerned about the weather from point A to point B and having to take your bike in every night of travel. However shipment can be delayed. The person putting the bike back together may not put the seat on correctly. What if you have a Power Tap? Not just anyone can reinstall that Power Tap. Delays, delays, delays. I would think twice before I shipped my bike. (Food for thought because bikes were delayed at the games in California and one seat was put on too tight that I am aware of according to Alfred. The participant had to adjust the seat.) Consider the stress you may be going through at or before the time of an event too. Alfred and I had just moved two weeks prior to the National Senior Games 2009. We had evacuated for two hurricanes six days apart before the State games in 2008. We were evacuees at the time of the 2008 State Games (Hurricane Ike). Those are major stress factors. How do you de-stress from such events prior to a race? Hmmmmmmm good question. Any answers out there? Pilots use a check list. I would include one with my Triathlete equipment if I were a Triathlete. Nurses use what we call our "second brain." It's a check list of what we have to do during our shift. Use a check list. Use it before you leave your house to be sure you have all the necessary supplements and equipment and clothing with you. Use it before the race to refresh. And for Pete's Sake, don't try anything new on race day.
